Job Description
We are now inviting applications for the post of Systems Administration/Software Engineer to join the Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe) at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
The post holder will be required to maintain the software infrastructure that supports the PDBe Oracle databases, Apache web resources and software installations, as well as to carry out some programming tasks. The successful candidate will work closely with two colleagues in a similar role and provide support to members of our inter-disciplinary and international team of scientists and developers. Specific tasks include:
  • Managing weekly production updates via data workflows
  • Maintaining Python/Apache web servers
  • Maintaining software installations of Python, Perl etc.
  • Trouble-shooting infrastructure problems on a day-to-day basis
  • Creating and deploying methods to improve PDBe systems and data quality
The Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe; pdbe.org) is a partner in the wwPDB organisation (wwpdb.org) that maintains the single, worldwide archive of biomacromolecular structure data, the Protein Data Bank (PDB). Together with its partner organisations (RCSB, PDBj and BMRB) PDBe accepts and processes depositions of such data. In addition, PDBe provides advanced services, using modern database technology, that build on the data held in the PDB and in the other biological data resources at the EBI.

Qualifications and Experience
The applicant will hold a degree in Computer Science and have a proven record in software development of more than 2 years. Experience of maintaining software infrastructure, including web-server machines is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have experience with relational databases (Oracle) and some knowledge of biosciences would be an advantage.
The post holder will have to be able to meet deadlines and to work independently while interacting extensively with other members of the PDBe Team.
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills as well as excellent knowledge of English are therefore required.
