IOM Internship Programme

Deadline: on a rolling basis
Open to: students approaching the end of their programme or graduates between 19 and 32 years of age
Duration: from 8 weeks to a maximum of 6 months
Internship: non-remunerated, Monthly Sustenance Allowance (MSA) – 500 to 1500 CHF (400 EUR to 1200 EUR) as partial contribution to accommodation and living expenses, in exceptional cases, travel expenses may be reimbursed

The IOM – International Organization for Migration – Internship Programme (the headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland) provides students with the opportunity to learn about IOM’s activities, to gain initial work experience, and/or to prepare for a degree dissertation. IOM provides on the job training to interns so that both they and the organization can benefit. In addition to this, IOM evaluates interns who may eventually be included on the roster for future external vacancies. Furthermore, internships build links with their institutions and universities.
Interns are given assignments and responsibility commensurate with their experience and they are referred to a supervisor/tutor, who is responsible for mentoring and coaching. They can be given short assignments either designed within on-going programmes or on an ad-hoc basis. Interns are not considered to be staff members but Terms of Reference, tasks, duration of assignment and supervisors are clearly determined. During their assignment, interns attend monthly briefings on the different services of the Organization and visit other Geneva-based International Organizations.

Eligibility

Interns tend to be students approaching the end of their programme or graduates between 19 and 32 years of age (average age is 26).

Conditions

Duration:
Internships can last from 8 weeks to a maximum of 6 months. The initial contract can be renewed, provided that the overall duration does not exceed 6 months.
Insurance:
Interns are covered against occupational injury and occupational illness under the Staff Compensation Plan.
Monthly Sustenance Allowance:
Internships are non-remunerated, voluntary assignments. IOM will grant to interns a Monthly Sustenance Allowance (MSA) as partial contribution to accommodation and living expenses. MSA does not apply for interns who receive stipends from their University, or other sources.
The allowance for internships in Geneva ranges from 500 to 1500 CHF. This amount will likely not accommodate all the expenses incurred by the intern. Thus, all remaining costs, including travel, accommodation, and living expenses, must be covered by the intern or the sponsoring institution.
Travel Expenses:
In exceptional cases, travel expenses may be reimbursed, upon approval by HRM, based on travel distance, level of education and budget availability.
More about financial matters in Geneva here.

Application Process

There is no specific time of the year for sending your application for an internship. Please register your profile in IOM e-Recruitment and select the interest group ‘Intern’. Also release your profile for our review.
If you have applied for a vacant internship position and you have not heard from the IOM in the following month from the closing date then it is most likely that the post has been filled. You can check your status in the service ‘Applications’.
If you have been interviewed, you will get written notification of the results of your interview.
If you were granted (or could be granted) a scholarship or your internship is a mandatory requirement for completing your studies, you should specify so in the cover letter as well as the exact dates of the proposed internship. Remember to attach a letter from your sponsor or university confirming the purpose of the assignment as well as the amount of your grant.
Unless otherwise specified, applications should be written in one of the IOM official languages (English, French, and Spanish).
For internships in the IOM’s field offices, you can send your application directly to the office you are interested in and copy the Staffing Unit in the cc line. You can find the email addresses and the contact details by selecting one of the countries on the ‘IOM Worldwide’ box on the right.

Guardians for children under 16

All international students under the age of 16 should have a guardian. This should be someone resident in the UK, normally over the age of 25, who can care for you if you are suddenly ill, or during vacations, half terms and at weekends if you cannot go home. Most schools insist that a guardian is appointed. However, in Scotland, this is a requirement in all schools.

More information on guardianship can be obtained from the Independent Schools Council website.

University of Central Lancashire International PhD Scholarship in School of Built & Natural Environment

International PhD Scholarship in Investigation of the impact of closed landfill sites on the environment at University of Central Lancashire, UK
Study Subject: Investigation of the impact of closed landfill sites on the environment
Employer: The University of Central Lancashire
Level: PhD
Scholarship Description: Applications are invited for a full-time scholarship available in the School of Built & Natural Environment. The scholarship is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to international applicants only. UK/EU applicants are not eligible to apply. The scholarship will provide £15000 towards the cost of the International tuition fee over 3 years.
The project will focus on the impact closed landfills have on the environment. The inclusion of the heavy metals and persistent organics into the waste stream has resulted in toxic mixtures being buried. New European legislation has attempted to address the issue by restricting the use of certain substances. However, this does not take into account the historic legacy. Within the electronic industry many compounds that have known health implications are being used as they are currently not being targeted by the EU. This is again added to the problem of contamination in future years. The research will undertake a study of these issues and recommend remediation activity to off-set the environmental impact. The research will investigate the leachate from selected landfills and consider the impact on the water catchment area with considerations to the ground water and surface water. The project will use a model approach (case study of a selected landfills within water catchment areas) in studying these impacts in relation to certain parameters. Applicants should have, or expect to receive a qualification equivalent to a high class UK honours degree.
Scholarship Application Deadline: 13 May 2011

University of Central Lancashire International PhD Scholarship in School of Pharmacy

International PhD Scholarship in Transcriptional regulation of lipid metabolism in yeast, an alternative metabolic model of human disease at University of Central Lancashire, UK
Study Subject: Transcriptional regulation of lipid metabolism in yeast, an alternative metabolic model of human disease
Employer: The University of Central Lancashire
Level: PhD
Scholarship Description: Applications are invited for a full-time scholarship available in the School of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences. A wide range of human diseases (e.g. cancer, diabetes, atherosclerosis) are accompanied by enhanced intracellular lipid droplet formation. In recent years, sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) have been shown to regulate the expression of key lipid synthesis genes including those encoding fatty acid synthase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase and ?9 desaturase. It is proposed that SREBPs function as allostatic nodes which contribute to cellular lipid quality control processes. Consequently, their activity is closely controlled through a variety of upstream (mTOR/Akt pathways) and downstream (metabolic products e.g. saturated fatty acids, cholesterol) effectors. The project will utilise a number of species of yeast, including Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Saccharomyces cerevisie and Lipomyces starykei, to determine the underlying transcriptional control of acyl lipid metabolism and lipid droplet formation. Using a variety of stimuli, we will investigate which transcription factors are involved in the promotion of acyl lipid metabolism and desaturation. This will involve the use of a number of molecular biology techniques including Northern blot and microarray analysis, to identify important regulatory proteins, and chromatin immunoprecipitation (CHiP), to determine regulatory elements within target genes. Furthermore, the genetic manipulation of yeast is relatively facile providing the opportunity to decipher the functional components of these regulatory pathways and identify future drug targets.

Osama bin Laden's death could trigger a new wave of virtual attacks.

BitDefender warns users that the recent story about bin Laden's death could trigger a new wave of attacks. Compromise the results of a search by specific keywords (technique known as Black Hat SEO) can lead to infection of users with different types of malware, antivirus false or PDF exploits.
"Black-hat SEO is a relatively new method, used increasingly frequently by many cyber criminals. A story such as bin Laden's death could lead to increased searches on search engines for certain keywords, and some results can direct you to malicious sites. Therefore, it is good for users to access only sites known, and also use specialized security solutions, "believes Catalin Cosoi, Head of Online Threats of BitDefender.
Since two nights ago, BitDefender threats began to monitor activity related to this topic and identified some threats "classic" bait featuring breaking news to infect users' computers.
Breaking News, Storm Worm style
It was not long after announcing the death of bin Laden and have already forged a series of articles appeared on the topic news feeds flooding. As long as the subject will be on the agenda for discussion, we can expect exploits PDF attachments. Do not forget that the Storm Worm was raging a few years ago, sending messages with pompous titles on natural disasters. It is important to know that newsletters are not accompanied by attachments, if you receive messages from unknown sources spectacular headlines, you may want to delete.
Links suspect fake antivirus
Bin Laden's death could not be overlooked by the cyber-criminals. If you make a thorough documentation of the subject and reach the last page of results, it is possible to pass over a number of sites hosted on domain co.cc and optimized for keywords such as "bin Laden's death." If you arrive on these pages and you get a picture with a scanner and the suggestion to download an antivirus solution because your computer is apparently infected, is a sign that you have not attained our goal. If you want to know more about Osama bin Laden's death would be safe to visit the only news sources.
To protect yourself, you are advised to install a security solution antispam, antiphishing, anti-fraud and anti-virus, such as BitDefender Internet Security 2011. Another technology is integrated into BitDefender suite Search Advisor, which pre-scan results provided by search engines, indicating if they are safe, dangerous or suspicious, before being accessed. If you are a BitDefender, we recommend BitDefender TrafficLight, a free browser application that protects against online attacks, fake websites and malicious scripts.

Facebook worth $ 100 billion, more than Cisco

Social networking giant is about to make an operational profit of $ 2 billion before depreciation, amortization and charges to income of $ 4 billion, Wall Street Journal, citing sources who are aware of company finances.
These data, increase revenues and profits well ahead of estimates is provided when Goldman Sachs and Digital Sky Technologies have invested in the company and justify an assessment of up to 100 billion dollars.
The company would have a value greater than Cisco networking titanium, or Amazon, the largest online retailer. For comparison, Cisco reported fiscal 2010 net income of $ 7.8 billion or 9.4 billion GAAP after another calculation methodology. With sales of 40 billion dollars and with as much money in company accounts, Cisco up the top results, and yet, that's market value given.
Most revenue comes from advertising and up to a total of $ 4 billion, the company is already a serious rival for Google, because they steal money from ads displayed in search engine. Last year, Google has made a net profit of $ 8.5 billion and revenue of 29.3 billion.
However, due to number 600 million visitors, up and allowed to increase the price of advertising by 40% this year.
Facebook recently launched Facebook Deals, offering discounts to users in the cities of Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco, thus competing Groupon.
The news comes, however, after a group of investors has made selling a stake worth one billion dollars to 90 billion company by assessing and then to 70 due to lack of interest. Investors are anxious about the company's current ratings, especially since they are very high compared to financial results or earnings.
Moreover, a recent study shows that the effects of social networks on consumer ads are more limited than those on email or search engines.
