Applications are
invited for a prestigious 3-year UCL IMPACT PhD studentship commencing
in October 2011. The studentship provides a tax-free stipend (£17,500)
in addition to covering tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.<br />
This
project, under the supervision of Professors Tom Salt and Phil Luthert,
aims to understand Neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases of
the retina. The aim is to explore the role of microglia in maintenance
of synaptic organization in the neural layers of the retina and the
impact of modulating microglial function via P2X7 receptors. We are
looking for highly motivated candidates with excellent scientific
potential and an interest in neuroscience.<br />
The UCL Institute of
Ophthalmology carries out research in state-of-the-art laboratories
adjacent to Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Trust. The Institute achieved
very high ratings in the last four Research Assessment Exercises,
demonstrating sustained excellence across a wide range of activities
from basic sciences to clinically-related translational study. This is
an ideal environment for research training.<br />
The PhD student will
benefit from state-of-art facilities within the UCL Institute of
Ophthalmology and UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences. The
successful candidate will gain experience in neuroscience,
electrophysiology, cell biology, and advanced microscopy techniques, and
develop an understanding of the neuroscience of the retina and retinal
disease. The project will benefit a student who wishes to establish a
career in Biomedical Science.<br />
Applicants should hold (or expect
to obtain) a minimum upper-second class honours degree or equivalent in
one of the biological sciences. Previous laboratory-based research
experience is desirable.<br />
Formal applications should be submitted

<b>Scholarship Description</b>:The Future Urban Mobility
(FM) Interdisciplinary Research Group is the fourth and most recent IRG
established within the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and
Technology (SMART). The FM IRG`s activities began officially on July 1,
2010.<br />
The goal of the FM IRG is to develop, in and beyond Singapore, new
paradigms for the planning, design and operation of future urban
mobility systems. Innovative urban mobility systems, aimed at both
passengers and freight, will materially enhance sustainability and
societal well-being on a global scale.<br />
This is a particularly opportune time to address this topic due to a
confluence of relevant developments: major advances in computing,
communications, and sensing technologies; the great progress that has
been made in recent years in our ability to model, evaluate and optimize
urban mobility systems; the growing importance of environmental
sustainability issues; the aging of physical infrastructure in developed
countries and the need for massive new infrastructure in less developed
ones; and the vast economic stimulus that can be provided by the
modernization and renewal of urban mobility systems worldwide.<br />
The FM IRG will:<br />
* harness and enhance promising networked computing and control (NCC)
technology-enabled innovations that may contribute to improved future
urban mobility;<br />
* develop decision models that can be applied to support various novel
mobility concepts, such as the pervasive use of real-time information,
mobility-on-demand services and green logistics;<br />
* investigate the potential and impacts of these innovations and decision models; and<br />
* assess their implications for urban development and urban planning organizations and institutions.<br />
The concrete project is the following:<br />
Real-time Path Tracking/Predictions and On-Demand Route Guidance Under Uncertainty<br />
Develop algorithms that use real-time data to (i) track and predict
paths in dynamic transportation networks, and (ii) provide on-demand
route guidance under uncertainty.<br />

Can you tell that we’re getting VERY close to the launch of Apple’s next-generation iPhone? Regardless of which rumors you believe, there’s likely just a few short weeks until Cupertino takes the wraps off of the iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4S, or… iPhone ?) and ‘new’ reports surrounding the launch of the device are coming in almost daily.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Today, <em style="font-style: normal;">9to5Mac</em> posted that their sources are indicating that Apple is planning to start taking pre-orders for the next-generation iPhone handset starting on September 30, with a target launch date of October 7. This agrees with another report from <em style="font-style: normal;">TiPB </em>a few days ago, and falls in line with those who believe that Apple will be launching in late September to finish off the third quarter strongly. <em style="font-style: normal;">9to5Mac</em> suggests that Apple has been trying to decide between a launch on October 7th or October 14th, but as things are going well for Apple in regards to production, the launch is currently set for the 7th. Now, since this is unofficial and just a rumor, this date could be the right one, could be pushed back, or could be entirely false. But for now, it looks like Apple plans to launch the next iPhone handset on this date.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
If the pre-order date is accurate and Apple does intend to start allowing pre-orders on Friday, September 30ththen it’s almost a certainty that they will hold some form of preview event in early September. Apple has traditionally held an event in September, but the focus of this event was generally around the iPod, iTunes and music in general. With music-only devices starting to become less important to Apple, it’s certainly possible that Apple will use their September event to focus on the new iPhone. Apple has also pointed to a September release for the new version of its iOS mobile operating system, dubbed iOS 5, and with the updated iOS now in its fifth beta it’s likely to be released alongside the next iPhone.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
The jury is still out as to what new devices we’ll see out of Apple this fall, with some analysts and media calling for a single new blockbuster handset and others suggesting Apple will release two new iPhones. The <em style="font-style: normal;">9to5Mac</em>report is in the latter camp, offering that Apple may release a new, more powerful handset than the current iPhone 4 and another less expensive handset that may be destined for prepaid markets. The updated iPhone will most likely gain the newer A5 dual-core processor (currently powering the iPad 2), an upgraded rear camera (likely 8 megapixel), and possibly a larger 4.0” display. If Apple does release a less-expensive prepaid handset, it will almost certainly be an underpowered iPhone 4 with some of the bells and whistles taken out.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
As per the usual, there is no word out of Apple to confirm or deny today’s report, or to suggest what’s going on with the next iPhone. If you’re desperately waiting for the iPhone 5, stay tuned as it appears that we’re just a couple of weeks away from hearing a firm date for Apple’s September event, where all will be revealed!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">

Facebook is the world's largest social network, with 750 million users worldwide as of July 2011.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
More than any other company, it is defining what some see as the "social'' era of the Internet, in which connections made among people replace algorithm-driven searches. And its policies, more than any others, seem to be driving the definition of privacy in this new age.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
The company, founded in 2004 by a Harvard sophomore, Mark Zuckerberg, began life catering first to Harvard students and then to all high school and college students. It has since evolved into a broadly popular online destination used by both teenagers and adults of all ages. In country after country, Facebook has cemented itself as the leader and often displacing other social networks.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
It has also come to be seen as one of the new titans of the Internet, challenging even Google with a vision of a Web tied together through personal relationships and recommendations, rather than by search algorithms. In a major expansion, Facebook has spread itself across other Web sites by offering members the chance to "Like'' something — share it with their network — without leaving the Web page they're on.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/07/technology/facebook-introduces-video-chat-in-a-partnership-with-skype.html" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">In July 2011, hoping to give its users a more intimate,</a> real-time way to stay in touch, the company introduced video chat in a partnership with <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/skype_technologies_sa/index.html?inline=nyt-org" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">Skype</a>, the Internet calling service.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
Facebook is also working on <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/27/technology/27facebook.html?ref=facebookinc&pagewanted=print" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">developing features that would make the sharing </a>of users’ favorite music, television shows and other media as much a part of its site as playing games or posting vacation photos.</div>
<div class="showhidetxt" style="padding-top: 0px;">
</div>
<div id="moretxt" style="display: block;">
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
<strong>An Internet Titan</strong></div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
Facebook has increasingly been seen as the only company to pose a threat to Google, which has used its dominant position in search and online ad placement to expand into most corners of the Web.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
But as a closed network, Facebook's oceans of content are out of the reach of Google's search engines, and some analysts think the personal recommendations made through Facebook networks could become a rival to the algorithm-based results pioneered by Google.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
In one sign of how much Facebook regards Google as a competitor, The Daily Beast <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2011-05-12/facebook-busted-in-clumsy-smear-attempt-on-google/" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">reported</a> that in May 2011 Facebook <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/12/facebook-seeks-to-downplay-campaign-against-google/?hp" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">had hired a public relations firm</a> to persuade reporters and privacy advocates to write stories critical of a new Google service, Social Circles.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
Privacy is a sore subject for Facebook, which has made a series of stumbles on the subject. With the potential for legal and regulatory clashes growing along with its influence, the company has layered its executive, legal, policy and communications ranks with high-powered politicos from both parties, beefing up its firepower for future battles in Washington and beyond.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
<strong>Disputed Origins</strong></div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
The company's rise has been marked by strings of controversies. Three other Harvard students maintain that they came up with the original idea and that Mr. Zuckerberg, whom they had hired to write code for the site, stole the idea to create Facebook.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
The company has denied the allegations. Another Harvard classmate, Aaron Greenspan, claims that he created the underlying architecture for both companies, but has declined to enter in a legal battle.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
"The Social Network," a movie released in 2010 about Facebook’s tumultuous origins, offered up what A.O. Scott called "a creation story for the digital age and something of a morality tale, one driven by desire, marked by triumph, tainted by betrayal and inspired by the new gospel: the geek shall inherit the earth."</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
Facebook has strenuously, and Mr. Zuckerberg more quietly, asserted that the portrayal of the company's founding is fiction. And Mr. Zuckerberg disputed the characterization of him in the film, though in a New Yorker magazine profile, he acknowledged having indulged in a bit of sophomoric arrogance.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
<strong>Privacy Concerns</strong></div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
Privacy worries have bedeviled <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/facebook_inc/index.html?inline=nyt-org" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">Facebook</a> since its early days, from the introduction of the endless scroll of data known as <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/10/fashion/10FACE.html" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">the news feed</a>to, most recently, the use of facial recognition technology to <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/09/technology/09facebook.html" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">identify people in photographs</a>.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
At the nub of all those worries, of course, is how much people share on Facebook, with whom and — perhaps most important — how well they understand the potential consequences.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
The back and forth between Facebook and its users over privacy is gaining importance as the company's growth continues unabated. Facebook's policies, more than those of any other company, are helping to define standards for privacy in the Internet age.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
The company has struggled to find a balance between giving users too little control over privacy and giving them too much, for fear they won’t share much at all. Seeking a happy medium, Facebook<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/24/technology/facebook-aims-to-simplify-its-privacy-settings.html" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">announced changes again in August 2011</a> that it says will help users get a grip on what they share.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
Implicit in these changes is the challenge brought on by Facebook’s own success. It is used by 750 million people worldwide, with varying degrees of knowledge about what it means to have a life online. There is the looming prospect that the company will go public, along with the abiding concern about potential government regulation or litigation stemming from privacy issues.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
Not least, there is the need for Facebook to cultivate the trust of its users, amid growing competition from <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/google_inc/index.html?inline=nyt-org" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">Google</a>’s nascent social networking service, <a href="http://plus.google.com/" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">Google Plus,</a> which emphasizes more compartmentalized communications with different sets of friends and acquaintances.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
<strong>The Goldman Deal</strong></div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
In January 2011, Facebook raised $500 million from Goldman Sachs and a Russian investor in a transaction that values the company at $50 billion. As part of the deal with Facebook, the bank could raise as much as $1.5 billion from investors for Facebook. The new money will give the company more firepower to steal away valuable employees, develop new products and possibly pursue acquisitions — all without being a publicly traded company. The investment may also allow earlier shareholders, including Facebook employees, to cash out at least some of their stakes.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
The new investment came as the <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/s/securities_and_exchange_commission/index.html?inline=nyt-org" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">Securities and Exchange Commission</a> <a href="http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2010/12/27/stock-trading-in-private-companies-draws-scrutiny/" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">began an inquiry</a> into the increasingly hot private market for shares in Internet companies, including Facebook,<a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/twitter/index.html?inline=nyt-org" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">Twitter</a>, the gaming site Zynga and LinkedIn, an online professional networking site. Some experts suggest the inquiry is focused on whether certain companies are improperly using the private market to get around public disclosure requirements.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
Also in January, catching many off guard, Goldman said that it would limit its Facebook offering to foreign investors, excluding clients in the United States because of worries that the deal could run afoul of securities.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
The offering to high-net-worth clients was supposed to have been a triumph for the firm, not the serious embarrassment it became. Goldman has been trying to move past run-ins with regulators, including a $550 million settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2010 over a complex mortgage investment. The Facebook plan will likely raise new questions about whether Goldman tried to push regulatory boundaries once again.</div>
<div style="padding-top: 0px;">
Mr. Zuckerberg had sought to keep close control over the company, spurning a $1 billion offer from Yahoo in 2006 and playing down the idea of a stock offering. But in the wake of the Goldman investment, <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/facebook_inc/index.html?inline=nyt-org" style="color: #004276; text-decoration: none;">Facebook</a> said that it will begin reporting its financial results by April 2012, setting the stage for a likely IPO.</div>

Children as young as 3 have a “number sense” that may be correlated with mathematical aptitude, according to a new study. <br />

It exists in all people, Dr. Libertus said, including infants and indigenous peoples who have had no formal education. <br />
The researchers measured this intuition in preschoolers by displaying flashing groups of blue and yellow dots on a computer screen. The children had to estimate which group of dots was larger in number. Since the display was fleeting, they had to use their number sense rather than count the dots. <br />
Children with a better number sense were also better at simple math problems the researchers posed. The children were asked to count the number of images on a page out loud, read Arabic numbers and make other simple calculations. <br />
Previous studies have shown that there is a connection between number sense and mathematical ability in adolescents. But this is the first study to explore the connection in children with little formal education. <br />
“We were interested in the earliest math abilities that children have, from before they enter school,” Dr. Libertus said. Understanding this could help level the playing field in mathematics among children. <br />
Dr. Libertus hopes that, with more insight, games or training programs could be developed for children to improve their number sense. <br />
The research <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-7687.2011.01080.x/abstract">is reported</a> in a recent issue of the journal Developmental Science. For intensive pig producers, rising energy prices are a serious concern, as a significant amount of energy is directly used for the ventilation and space heating of animals. The application of novel materials and energy saving techniques has been given high priority in the built environment in recent times. Such adaptation measures can reduce energy costs significantly for the pig industry, as there is a growing need to adopt climate-adaptation measures for sustainable building use into the future.<br />
The proposed project will analyse the current, most significant, energy saving technologies available for the built environment, ranging from building materials to microclimate control, in an effort to develop energy efficient building configuration for the UK climate of the future. During the project, a wide range of adaptation measures will be evaluated for indoor building environmental performance (thermal comfort), as well as heating and cooling energy consumption. The focus will be on adapting the building envelope by developing physical "scaled-down" models and numerical simulation. 'High-resolution whole-building simulation', which refers to the combination of Building Energy Simulation, Building Envelope Heat-Air-Moisture transfer models (BEHAM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models, will be employed for different climate scenarios. This combination is particularly important for the evaluation of new materials and ventilation and energy conservation techniques for different climatic scenarios. The building envelope adaptation measures to be evaluated will include comfort, energy efficiency as well as active and passive heating/cooling measures, and therefore will allow the feasibility of hybrid natural/mechanical systems for use in pig buildings to be assessed.<br />
This PhD studentship is funded by BPEX, a division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board that represents pig levy payers in the UK, along with contributions from HAUC.<br />
For informal enquiries applicants may contact the Director of Studies, Dr Tomas Norton (HAUC) (<a href="mailto:tnorton@harper-adams.ac.uk">tnorton@harper-adams.ac.uk</a>).<br />
The successful applicant will normally be expected to hold either a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree in an appropriate engineering related subject. Interest in instrumentation, computer programming and physical processes (heat, air, moisture and pollution transfer) in the built environment is essential.<br />
Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons from EU and non-EU countries. A minimum level of competency in English is required. International applicants need to be classed as an overall Grade 6.5 using the International English Language Test System (IELTS) or equivalent Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or PTE score.<br />

These prestigious awards are made by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Awards are available in the area of <strong>Optical and Quantum Optical Communications</strong>.<br />
The available project addresses the future generation of optical communication networks where multiple users wish to utilise the same infrastructure, namely, optical fibre, for both classical and quantum communication applications. This is in essence similar to a classical <em>multiple-access</em> problem, such as that of mobile communication, where multiple users communicate via a shared communication channel. In such hybrid quantum-classical networks, this feature must be extended to include Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) applications, where we are dealing with optical signals as weak as a single photon.<br />
QKD provides unbreakable, future-proof, security against the vulnerabilities of most cryptosystems currently in operation. To this point, QKD has been implemented mostly over dedicated channels and between two parties. Before current communication vulnerabilities are exploited, it is essential to facilitate the use of QKD technology for any two public users at any distance, via a <em>network</em>. This project includes <strong>theoretical study of various network configurations</strong> in terms of their secret-key generation rate, cost, and reliability, as well as their compatibility with existing/future optical communication networks.<br />
The successful candidate will work at the intersection of quantum information science and optical communications, and will be in close contact with researchers and scientists in the <a href="http://www.engineering.leeds.ac.uk/electronic/research/index.shtml">Institute of Integrated Information Systems </a>as well as the <a href="http://www.qi.leeds.ac.uk/">Quantum Information Group</a> at the University of Leeds. All interested candidates with background in engineering, physics, or mathematics are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should start no later than 1 October 2011.<br />
<strong>How are they awarded?</strong><br />
To be considered you should make a formal application for PhD study either on line through the University website, or on the University's application form. Information of how to apply on line can be found on the <a href="http://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/20023/postgraduate_research/86/applying_for_research_degrees">University's pages</a>. Please state clearly that you wish to be considered for a DTG award in the finance section.<br />
<strong>How much are they worth?</strong><br />
The award covers academic fees, an annual maintenance award of approximately £13,590 in the first year (typically rising with inflation for subsequent years) and additional funds for fieldwork and travel. Awards are for 3.5 years, subject to satisfactory performance.<br />
To be eligible for the award, you must have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least 3 years preceding the start date of the award, and eligible to pay fees at the home/EU rate. EU candidatures who have been resident in the UK for three years (including for education) are eligible for the full award. Other EU candidates may receive a fees-only award.<br />
<strong>How many are available? </strong><strong>1</strong><br />
<strong>When's the deadline? </strong><strong>31 August 2011</strong><br />
