Scholarship Description: The starting point are nano- and en microstructures (nanowires, waveguides) based on semiconducting materials such as synthetic diamond, silicon, and conjugated polymers, which serve as an immobilization platform for the coupling of specific receptor molecules. The molecular recognition of marker proteins will be detected on basis of the resulting changes of the electronic and optical properties of the underlying nanowires. This project combines elements from several scientific domains including electronics and photonics at the nanostructure level, the biochemistry of surfaces, and the medical diagnostics. Within the framework of this project, there will be a close interaction with the Faculty of Engineering at Ghent University and the Faculty of Bio-engineering at the Catholic University Leu.
