PhD Studentship in Molecular Interactions between Butterfly Wings Patterning at University of Exeter

BBSRC Funded PhD Studentship in Molecular Interactions between Butterfly Wings Patterning at University of Exeter, UK
Study Subject: Molecular Interactions between Butterfly Wings Patterning
Employer: University of Exeter
Level: Undergraduate
Scholarship Description: We are inviting applications for this BBSRC-funded PhD studentship to commence October 2011. The studentship will cover UK/EU tuition fees plus an annual Research Council maintenance grant (in 2011/12 this will be £13,590) for three years. This project is one of a number that are in competition for funding. Studentships will be awarded on the basis of merit.
The successful applicant will benefit from working within a lively research environment within Biosciences (Cornwall Campus, near Falmouth) at the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Exeter. The supervisor for this studentship will be Professor Richard ffrench-Constant. Wing patterns in heliconius butterflies are controlled by one to six genes, depending on the species. The red forewing band in some species is initiated by the transcription factor optix which triggers scale cell development and colouring. This project will look for the binding partners of optix (Groucho and optix binding protein) and test the hypothesis that these are encoded at the other wing patterning loci. Thus forming a gene network for patterning. The student will work in a one to one relationship with a postdoctoral fellow and will share tools and resources. The student will gain experience in a range of techniques including yeast two hybrid screening, immunoprecipitation and immunocytochemistry.
Eligibility: A strong first degree (at least an Upper Second Class Honours or equivalent) in a relevant subject. You will only be eligible for the full stipend of £13,590pa if you are from the UK or EU and have been resident in the UK or EU for a minimum of three years prior to application.
Scholarship Application Deadline: 30 May 2011.
