Full-time PhD Studentship, Department of Life Sciences, The Open University

2011 PhD Studentship funded by OU and TAP Biosystems in the field of Life Sciences at Open University Business School in UK

Study Subject: Life Sciences
Employer:OU and TAP Biosystems
Level:PhD
Scholarship Description:This project aims to develop unique CNS tissue models and then use them to address specific neuroscience questions. It is funded jointly by the OU and TAP Biosystems and will involve an innovative platform technology (RAFT™) for the generation of complex 3D model tissues. These will be used to monitor the responses of neurons and glia to simulated damage, and to test the effectiveness of this novel approach as a screening technology for potential neuroprotective therapies.

Developing this exciting new technology and applying it to neuroscience research will involve close collaboration between scientists and engineers in academia and industry. The multi-disciplinary project will be based in the well-equipped biomedical research laboratories at the OU in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, in collaboration with TAP Biosystems in Royston, Hertfordshire. Applicants should have a good honours degree in a relevant subject and an interest in interdisciplinary research leading to commercially viable tissue substitute systems.

Scholarship Application Deadline:20/05/2011
